Development Trusts aim
to bring about social, economic and environmental renewal. They do
this through community enterprise.
Development Trusts (like Trinity) combine locally-led action with
business expertise and seek to move beyond provision of welfare services,
by setting up social businesses, encouraging self-help and reducing
dependency. They bring private sector entrepreneurial spirit to community
problems.
They work alongside both the voluntary sector and local authorities,
sharing public service values and producing community benefit. They
share private sector goals of wealth creation, but retain surpluses,
not distributing them.
Development Trusts help create a ‘can-do’ culture that
drives local change.
The DTA believes:
Regeneration only works if local people have the opportunity to
steer changes in their communities
A community-led enterprise culture fosters self-help & reduces
dependency and therefore is the basis for confident, thriving and
active communities.
